Health and social care staff shine in the spotlight

18 March 2016

NHS staff and volunteers from across Torbay and Southern Devon have been recognised at an awards ceremony celebrating their hard work and dedication to health and social care.

The Blue Shield awards ceremony which took place yesterday (Thursday 17 March), is hosted by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. The awards aim to recognise individuals or groups whose energy, commitment and dedication ensures that high quality and effective services are delivered to patients, services user and staff.

Staff, volunteers and their guests attended the event, which was held at Torquay’s Riviera International Conference Centre, to see the winners announced. Nominations are made anonymously, by both members of the public and by staff, and are judged by a panel of experts and independent members.

There were seven ‘Gold’, seven ‘Silver’ and 12 ‘Bronze’ award winners as well as two special awards across nine categories, including individual, team, partnership, innovation, volunteer and lifetime achievement.

Certificates were presented by members of the Trust’s Executive Team including Mairead McAlinden (Chief Executive) and Sir Richard Ibbotson (Chairman).

Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “All our staff and volunteers work incredibly hard and this is a great opportunity to recognise those who are making a real difference to the people who use our services, and to their colleagues in the Trust. Hearing their stories and what they achieve every day is inspirational and truly heart-warming.

“Everybody that was nominated and shortlisted deserves to be recognised and thanked by all of us for their hard work and commitment to great care. A special ‘thank you’ to their sponsors too, for taking the time and trouble to nominate them.”

Sir Richard Ibbotson, Chairman of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone who received an award at this year’s ceremony, as well as all those who were nominated. It really is a privilege to work with people who are so dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to providing high quality health and social care to the people of Torbay and South Devon.

“Our staff and volunteers are the beating heart of our Trust and the Blue Shield Awards ceremony is one of the ways we recognise their achievements and the positive impact they make on the lives of local people.”
