Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a group programme for people with breathlessness due to a long-term chest condition, usually COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Patients can be referred by a health professional and are assessed by members of the team which includes a Specialist Respiratory Nurse, Clinical Psychologist, Physiotherapist and Fitness Instructor. If appropriate, patients attend the Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme, which runs twice a week for six weeks in a community setting within Torbay or Newton Abbot.

Programmes include an individually tailored exercise programme as well as self help education about healthy lifestyles and managing respiratory conditions. We address the impact of COPD on patient’s physical abilities, psychological health and relationships. Guest speakers include a Respiratory Consultant, Dietitian and Stop Smoking Advisor. In addition, patients have the opportunity to attend an exercise only group for up to six weeks prior to and following the programme. Further home exercise is encouraged. Progress is measured with individual outcome measures and patient feedback. The local programme aims to reduce symptoms and improve the physical abilities and quality of life of our patients.
