Specialist Psychology

The specialist Clinical Health Psychologists work with both outpatients and inpatients within Torbay Hospital. We have well-established links with healthcare professionals within South Devon and across the Hospital. This enables us to provide a full and joined-up, flexible service to meet the specific needs of each patient. We accept referrals from a range of healthcare professionals in Devon. We provide a service to patients who have psychological difficulties associated with physical health problems.

Common problems we work with include:

  • Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS)
  • Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms associated with hospital procedures or physical health problems
  • Health anxiety and needle/blood phobia
  • Difficulties with decision-making regarding medical treatments, preparation for surgery
  • Self-management and compliance with medical treatment regimes
  • Psychological consequences of physical illness

We also work with patients with long term conditions (LTCs). These include, but are not limited to:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiac Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (e.g. Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease)
  • Tinnitus
  • Stroke
  • HIV/AIDS

Patients may come with depression, anxiety and adjustment difficulties. We have expertise in the assessment and treatment of complex psychological problems associated with the areas listed above. As Clinical Psychologists we are trained to use a range of psychological treatments and to alter our treatment to suit each patient. These treatments may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
  • Clinical hypnosis
  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
