Strength and balance exercises for healthy ageing
An exercise programme for residents across Torbay and South Devon who have a fear of falling or who feel unsteady. If you have a history of falling or have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, our strength and balance classes could help improve your confidence and mobility.
Regular exercise and strengthening techniques have been proven to help prevent people from falling and fracturing bones or sustaining other injuries.
Our strength and balance classes are designed to help boost confidence, improve flexibility, mobility, strength and stamina whilst teaching you techniques to keep you safe at home and outside.
What can I expect?
This class aims to teach you techniques for getting up out of a chair and how to get onto and up from the floor safely. Some of the exercises are done whilst sitting in a chair and others are done whilst standing up but with support available as necessary.
To take part in the classes you will need to be referred by a health professional; this could be your doctor or practice nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or even from the hospital. The person who refers you will send the referral directly to us. You will then be sent an appointment for an assessment.
During the assessment, the exercise instructor will discuss some questionnaires with you and ask questions related to your health. In addition, the instructor will run through 6 simple functional tests to measure mobility.
Who can attend?
Our class is designed for people who have been diagnosed with osteopenia, osteoporosis or those who have a history or a fear of falling.
There are no age criteria but the class is generally for older adults.
