Bay walks is a programme of walks across Torbay led by volunteers. There are short, medium, long and progression walks in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham – so we have something for everyone.
Walking with our groups is free and sociable and great for your health. For our current timetable and more information on the programme, visit Walking for Health.
Pedometer loan scheme
Walking is one of the best ways to increase your physical activity and in Torbay we have a pedometer loan scheme to help you watch the amount of walking you are doing.
You can work together with a health professional to set your targets and monitor your progress towards increasing your physical activity and realising real health benefits.
What can I expect?
You can loan a pedometer from the Community Fitness Team and other trained staff in Torbay. Pedometers are loaned out for up to 12 weeks. At the first appointment you will be shown how to use your pedometer to record your daily steps.
You measure your normal daily step pattern in week 1 and then agree with a health professional a realistic and achievable ‘step target’ each week in order to increase your activity levels at a rate that suits you.
How can a pedometer help me?
The health benefits of walking are great whatever pace you walk at:
At any pace
- Makes you feel good
- Reduces risk factors in the elderly
- Improves sleep
- Gives you more energy
- Benefits your immune system
- Reduces constipation
- Reduces the chances of developing bowel cancer
- Reduces the chance of developing osteoporosis
- Improves muscle strength
- Helps manage weight
- Protects against type 2 diabetes
At a brisk pace
- Improves functioning of the heart and lungs
- Reduces blood pressure
Who can take part?
Anyone who wants to monitor their daily steps and increase the amount of activity they are doing can loan a pedometer.
How much does it cost?
A minimum refundable deposit of £10 is required, depending on the model of pedometer you choose to loan.
If you wish to keep the pedometer we will keep the deposit as payment for the purchase of the pedometer.
