FAQs – Building a Brighter Future

What is the New Hospitals Programme? The New Hospitals Programme (NHP) is a national initiative focused on the delivery of 40 new hospitals across the UK by 2030. In March 2020, we were provisionally allocated £3.7million of funding to proceed with the planning for a £350 million hospital development.

What does that mean for Torbay and South Devon? For us, this is not just about building a new hospital in Torquay. We are using the opportunity to explore delivering services in different and new ways that provide better outcomes for our population and better working environments for our staff across all the communities we serve. For us it’s about ‘Building a Brighter Future’.

What is ‘Building a Brighter Future’? Building a Brighter Future will mean we are able to deliver better care and outcomes for our patients, and it is a commitment to sustainability and value for money. It’s not just about hospital services or buildings (although these will play a part) it’s about changing how we work so we can continue to provide great care over the next 10 years.

How are you going to do that? We are focusing our programme around three elements: people, estates and digital. These are the areas that, if we get right, will provide a brighter future for our people, partners and patients.

The programme is made up of a number of different phases and is likely to last at least 10 years. It’s currently in the 1st stage of three approval phases.

Have we received funding yet? We have to make the case to gain funding and we won’t receive it if we can’t prove we deserve this funding. This means proving we can manage our money, our services and our estates well.

Is there any chance we won’t receive the funding? We have to ensure that we can demonstrate the requirement for the investment, so while the chances of us not receiving the funding are low, we do have to prove the case.

When will we start hearing more about the changes? We will have to make difficult decisions at times about what we build, what we refurbish and what stays the same. We will be continually mindful of the impact that our changes may have. We commit to being open and honest with you about the decisions we are making and why we are making them. We’ll be sharing more information with you over the coming months as we start to develop our outline business case. We’ll be seeking your views and feedback in a number of areas as well as offering you regular and ongoing opportunities to have your say and get involved.
