Torbay Hospital Board appoints Jon Welch as Associate Non-Executive Director
24 July 2015
A new associate non-executive director has been appointed to join the Board of South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Torbay Hospital.
Jon Welch takes up his post as an associate on 1 August 2015 and will become a full non-executive director from the date Torbay Hospital forms a new integrated care trust with Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust.
Jon joined the Board of Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust in 2006 (then known as Torbay Care Trust) and is currently the non-executive director with responsibility for governance, a role he will continue in parallel to his new associate role with the Hospital.
As a non-executive director for the past nine years, Jon has had corporate responsibility for both community health and for adult social care provision. He played a key part in ensuring that the Trust achieved both financial and operational targets, initially as Audit Committee Chair and then as non-executive director responsible for governance.
Jon comes from a Royal Navy background, with his last appointment before he retired being Head of Research and Technology for NATO Transformation Command in the US. He received a letter of appreciation and commendation from the NATO Secretary General following his successful formation of a new department with high level NATO interest. He was also honoured with the Legion of Merit by the US President; the highest award the US can give to a foreign national.
Jon has spent much of his career at sea, serving in Australia, Italy and America. He is married, has four children and lives in Brixham.
Chairman Sir Richard Ibbotson said: “I would like to extend a warm welcome to Jon in joining our Board, particularly at this exciting time when we come together with our colleagues in the community trust to provide more joined up care for local residents.
“I know that in his role as a Governor with Torbay Hospital for the past nine years he has made an enormous contribution as a respected voice of calm and reason, and isn’t afraid to challenge when the need arises. I am sure our patients will benefit hugely from his vast experience.”
Speaking following his formal appointment, Jon said: “I am truly delighted to be appointed to the Board of South Devon Healthcare. Being a Board Member in every organisation I’ve been part of for the past twenty years has taught me the value of firm challenge, open debate and then corporate action.
“I strongly believe in combining health and social care under a single Board and I am really looking forward to using my experience to help the new integrated care organisation start well and then continue into an outstanding model for the rest of the country to follow.”
