Torbay Hospital highly regarded by inpatients

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) recently published the results of its latest annual adult inpatient survey.
The inpatient survey was sent to a sample of 1250 patients who were discharged from Torbay Hospital during July 2015. Responses were received from 681 Torbay Hospital patients; a response rate of 56.5 per cent.
The Trust, still known as South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust at that time, performed well in the survey of 62 questions across a wide range of measures which are benchmarked against all other acute trusts in the country.
The Trust scored in the top 20 per cent of Trusts on 11 of the 62 questions, including:
- Cleanliness of toilets and bathrooms
- Quality of hospital food
- Choice of food
- Help to eat meals
- Respect from doctors
- Confidence and trust in the nurses treating them
- Finding a staff member to discuss worries and fears
- Pain control
- Response to call bells
- Timely discharge
- Feeling well looked after by the staff
The areas in which Torbay Hospital scored better than average were:
- ensuring patients had enough help to eat their meals
- informing patients how they may expect to feel following an operation or procedure
- providing discharge information
- having plans in place when patients were transferred to nursing or residential care
The survey also highlighted some areas for improvement, and these related to admission date being changed by the hospital, availability of hand wash gels, explanation about pain control prior to operations, opportunity to comment on quality of care during the patient’s stay, and information about how to give both positive and negative feedback.
Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Feedback from our patients is crucial to understanding what we do well and how we can improve, and I want to thank everyone who responded to this very important survey.
“Our staff should be proud to be in the top 20 per cent of Trusts for measures that reflect our commitment to compassionate and high quality care, such as feeling well looked after by staff, being treated respectfully by doctors and having confidence and trust in the care of our nurses. These results reflect the findings of our recent CQC inspection which rated our staff as outstanding for caring, a rating achieved by only 13 per cent of Trusts.
“However, we will never be complacent; we can always improve and we will learn from what our patients say in this survey about where we can do better. Already we have volunteers on the wards every day asking people about their experience of our care and we share this information with our ward teams and discuss it at Board level. We are also planning ways to make it easier for all patients, relatives and carers to give us feedback about their experience of our care.”
As well as responses to the questions asked in the survey, patients also had the opportunity to comment about their care. Over 800 written comments were made by Torbay Hospital patients. Seventy five per cent of these comments were positive – almost half of them related to staff, and other comments referred to treatment, environment, facilities and pathways of care.
