Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Dermatology Service has won a prestigious national award from the British Dermatology Nursing Group (BDNG).

The award for ‘Dermatology team of the Year 2016’ was presented to Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Dermatology Sarah Burns, and Dermatology Research Nurse Natalie Taylor, on behalf of the Torbay and South Devon team at the British Dermatological Nursing Group’s Annual Conference in Bournemouth at the end of June.

The Dermatology Team of the Year Award was introduced to celebrate team work and to recognise the importance of working together effectively for patients. The winner of the award is decided by the BDNG committee which consists of eminent Dermatology nurses who are, or have been, experts in their field at national level in clinical, educational and research specific areas.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Dermatology, Sarah Burns, said: “Because our dermatology patients have such a visible disease, as their treatment progresses and their confidence levels grow, they often form a special bond with the staff. Seeing the difference the dermatology service can make to our patients’ lives is extremely rewarding. I was truly honoured to accept this award on behalf of our team.”

Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive for Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, added: “I sincerely congratulate our Dermatology team; they fully deserve the national recognition bestowed by this award. What makes the award even more special is that the team was nominated by patients for the support they give to sufferers of chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema.

“It is a testament to excellent team working led by Dr Mihaela Costache and reflects how well everyone works together – the nurses, doctors and administration staff – to make sure their patients get the best possible care and a good experience of that care. That’s what this award is all about.”
