The Lodge Cancer Support Centre in Torquay has recently held two workshops providing free confidence boosting skincare and grooming techniques for men undergoing cancer treatment.

National charity, Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) who host the workshops, help boost the physical and emotional wellbeing of people undergoing cancer treatment through free Workshops, printed materials and online tutorials.

Lodge Cancer Support Centre Manager, Jenny Daly commented “We have held two LGFB Skin Fitness sessions at The Lodge and these are proving to be popular and informative, with all participants saying they have both enjoyed and learnt through attending the group session. Learning tips and advice on skin protection, moisturising and shaving advice seem to be of particular interest.

Men can find it difficult to talk about their experiences but by doing something together, like the Skin Fitness workshop, it can direct their focus away from their illness allowing the conversation and sharing to naturally occur.”

Led by volunteers from the grooming/barbering industry, the grooming sessions are an opportunity for men to meet others in a similar situation and learn simple yet effective shaving and grooming techniques to enhance their features when going through cancer treatment and to ultimately care for their skin going forward.

Sarahjane Robertson, Chief Executive of Look Good Feel Better said: “Following extensive research, we were genuinely shocked by the lack of support for men and we’ve been unanimously told that male cancer patients would really value detailed information covering basic skincare, cleansing, moisturising, sun care, shaving, nutrition, fitness and oral care alongside online tutorials and group sessions.”

Look Good Feel Better and Macmillan would love to be able to offer more of these sessions to men in the Torbay area but need more volunteers to come forward. If you are a male grooming expert or barber trained and would like to help run these workshops, please get in touch by calling 01372 747500 or email
