Becoming a volunteer

Interested in joining our volunteers?

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust manages nearly 700 volunteers for NHS organisations across the South Devon area. Volunteers provide an important support service and give up their time freely on a regular basis to help patients, visitors and staff in a variety of ways where they are most needed.

Examples of tasks and duties:

  • Beverage Trolley
  • Canteen helpers
  • Chaplaincy
  • Fundraising
  • Hospital Radio (Torbay, Totnes and Newton Abbot Hospitals)
  • Hospital Car Drivers (Torbay Hospital)
  • Kidney Unit Befriender (South Devon Kidney Unit only)
  • Ward volunteers
  • Welcomers (Clinics and Outpatients)

Vacancies arise throughout the year and new volunteering roles emerge on a regular basis. However, not all the above duties exist in every hospital so please check with Voluntary Services for more details.

Can anyone become a volunteer?

Our volunteers come from a range of different ages and backgrounds. No previous experience is necessary, but you will need to be a good listener and someone who can readily understand the needs of individual patients. As long as there is a suitable vacancy, we will always try to arrange your placement so that it matches your particular skills and interests.

New volunteers are always welcome. We normally ask that you start by giving two to three hours per week and if at a later date you wish to increase your donated time, this may be considered by your Volunteer Manager.

We need you to be reliable and have an awareness of the individual needs of patients especially surrounding confidentiality issues.

How do I apply?

You can telephone, write to or email Volunteer Services at:

Ground Floor Office
Bay House
Unit 2
Rivera Park
Nicholson Road
Torquay TQ2 7TD

Telephone: 01803 210518/210519
Email: Volunteer Services

Please give a number where we can contact you for an informal discussion. If you then decide to go ahead we will arrange for you to attend an interview in the department where there is a vacancy. If you are successful at interview then you will be asked to complete an application form and give two references, complete a health check form and in most cases, supply information and personal identification documents so that we can request a Criminal Records Check.

When all the checks have been completed and are satisfactory, you will be asked to start your voluntary role for a trial period of one month. This is to help you decide if this is the right placement for you and if not, we will investigate other options.

For information regarding the Hospital Car Service and becoming a voluntary car driver, please see the Patient Transport Service pages.
