About the Hub
Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has developed the Employability Hub. The ‘Hub’ aims to support the local community to find sustainable employment. The Employability Hub thus ensures a more employable, highly skilled, and representative workforce.
The Trust is committed to promoting a culture that actively values difference and recognises that people from different backgrounds and experiences bring valuable contributions and enhance the way we work. The Trust aims to be an inclusive organisation, where diversity is valued, respected and built upon, with the ability to recruit and retain a diverse workforce that reflects the communities it serves.
The Hub is based at the Horizon Centre of Torbay Hospital and is supported by a small team who work together to identify valuable placements across the locality.
The Employability Hub is a framework supporting four specific programmes:
Inclusion groups refers to people that can face discrimination and social exclusion. These groups include, but are not limited to, people that are homeless, ex-offenders and substance misuse.
Aspire has a very clear goal – to give people (aged 18-24) with a learning disability or Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) the skills to gain competitive paid employment.
Our general work experience programme offers placements of up to 2 weeks to young people (aged 16-19) referred by their school. Adult work experience is also available.
Devon Studio School
Devon Studio School (DSS) is part of a new generation of state schools, which have been created to address the challenge of preparing young people (aged 14-19) for work.
The Hub’s Step In programme focuses on supporting members of the local community who often face discrimination and social exclusion to improve their employability. This includes (but is not limited to) those who are homeless, ex-offenders and those with substance misuse issues. We provide access to work placements to develop people’s knowledge, skills and experience.
The Hub works in partnership with local organisations who refer individuals into the Hub. For information on how to refer into the Hub, please see our contact details on the reverse of this leaflet.
Those who demonstrate their commitment to the Step In programme and excel during their placement, may be considered for a traineeship.
A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused in giving people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At its core is work preparation training, English and Maths for those who needs it, and a high quality work placement. Traineeships support businesses to develop the next generation of employees, equipping people with the skills required in labour market.
Traineeships are offered for a maximum of 12 months for 18 hours per week at National Minimum Wage (16 hours on the job and two hours training).
Our dedicated team will work with individuals throughout the programme and support them to identify potential job vacancies.
Aspire has a very clear goal – to give young people with learning disabilities the skills to gain competitive paid employment. In Torbay, our vision is to develop a dynamic, flexible and responsive workforce that is reflective of our local community demographic. Our mission therefore, is to have a more employable, highly skilled, workforce and to have positive employment destinations for young people with a learning disability or autistic spectrum condition.
Aspire placements will be advertised in the Spring of each year. Applications can be obtained from South Devon College.
