Pain relief after surgery

Effective pain relief post operatively is very important as it leaves you comfortable and allows you able to take deep breaths, cough and mobilise out of bed. All tasks which help your recovery.

The Anaesthetist will discuss the various pain relief options available to you on the day of surgery depending on the type of surgery you are having and your pre-existing medical conditions. They will involve the acute pain service when necessary in your postoperative care. The various options could include:

  • Pills, tablets or liquids to swallow
  • Injections
  • Local anaesthetic techniques
  • Epidurals and Spinals
  • Patient controlled analgesia
