Choosing to live in a care home

Care homes in Torbay

We plan and pay for services (commission) from privately-owned or charity-run residential care and nursing homes in Torbay (Torquay, Paignton and Brixham).

Care homes for older people and younger adults, including those with a learning disability or mental health issues, may provide personal care or nursing care. A care home which is registered to provide personal care will offer support and will ensure that basic personal needs, such as meals, bathing, going to the toilet and medication are taken care of. In some homes, some people are able to take care of many of their own needs.

Some people may need medical care and some care homes are registered to provide this. These are often referred to as nursing homes. Other homes specialise in certain types of conditions, for example dementia.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The Care Quality Commission registers and inspects all care homes (and other adult social care and health services) against standards and gives them a quality rating. Inspection reports are available to view on the CQC website or the CQC can be contacted on 03000 616161.
