Audiology Department welcomes artwork from students

Members of the Audiology Department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to have received a series of original artworks which will enhance the patient waiting areas at Torbay Hospital and Newton Abbot Hospital.

Sarah Griffin, Senior Audiologist, worked with arts teacher, Nick Rangecroft, from King Edward VI Community College (KEVICC), to encourage BTech Arts students to develop ideas and portray different aspects of the themes of sound, communication and listening through their artwork.

The Old Totnesian Society kindly paid for the pictures to be printed and mounted with a wipeable finish and Sarah commented: “It has been a pleasure to work with the young people at KEVICC for this project and I have been impressed with their engagement and the quality of their work.”

Nick said of the project: “All the students working on the Audiology Department project found it really motivational that their work would be making a difference to the hospitals. I was impressed with the quality of the outcomes and the range of approaches the students took. Sarah was great with the students when we launched the project during the middle of lockdown at the start of this year. We are looking forward to participating in future projects with the Trust.”

The project was part of the HeArTs collaboration which aims to play a key role in enhancing patients, their families and staff experiences from artist installations to creating relaxed spaces, less clinical environments.

Current HeArTs events and activities include the Gallery at Torbay Hospital, HeArTs+minds a group that meets on the first Wednesday of each month to showcase staff talent and talent from the wider community, Waymarker Stones, Poetry evening, history group and performances in TREC in the Horizon Centre at Torbay Hospital.
