Dying to get a tan? Skin expert shares the signs of skin cancer at free event

People across Torbay and South Devon are being invited to learn how to protect their skin, recognise the early signs of skin cancer and understand when to seek expert advice at the next Medicine for Members event hosted by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
The free event will take place at 5pm on Tuesday 20 October at TREC, Torbay Hospital and will feature a talk from Dr Rosie Davis, Consultant Dermatologist, who practises at both Mount Stuart Hospital and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
Medicine for Members is a popular series of public events hosted by the Trust’s governors, giving local people the opportunity to hear directly from clinical experts about health topics that matter to them. The events offer an engaging way to learn more about healthcare, hear about the latest developments in treatment and ask questions in an informal setting.
South Devon experiences high levels of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and has particularly high rates of skin cancer compared with many other parts of the UK. As a result, increasing awareness of skin cancer prevention and early diagnosis has never been more important.
During the event, Dr Rosie Davis will explain how people can reduce their risk through sensible sun protection, highlight the changes to look out for on their skin and provide an overview of the different types of skin cancer and how they are diagnosed and treated.
There will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to ask questions and hear practical advice that they can take away and apply in their daily lives.
Dr Rosie Davis said: “Many people are surprised to learn that South Devon has particularly high rates of skin cancer. While enjoying the outdoors is one of the great benefits of living in this part of the country, it is important that we understand how to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of UV exposure. Early detection can make a significant difference to outcomes, so I hope this event will help people feel more confident about recognising changes in their skin, knowing when to seek advice and taking simple steps to reduce their risk.”
The event is open to everyone, whether or not they are a Foundation Trust member. To reserve a place or find out more, contact the Foundation Trust Office or call 01803 655406.
