Pelvic health physiotherapy is recommended by the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Effectiveness) as the first line of treatment for women with urinary incontinence. More than 80% of people we’ve treated for urinary incontinence and / or pelvic organ prolapse were discharged with significant improvements in their symptoms. Almost 50% of people we’ve treated had no urinary leakage after finishing treatment, and age was not a factor in not restricting or limiting improvements made.
Our service
Our specialist pelvic health physiotherapists (formerly women’s health physiotherapists) work in clinics in Ashburton, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Teignmouth, and Totnes.
You can refer yourself to our service, following a brief telephone triage with our admin team, or your GP and other health professionals can refer you. We are a caring and passionate team and take a holistic approach to our patients’ care.
To self-refer, re-arrange or cancel a pre-made appointment please phone us on 0300 004 0335.
Pelvic conditions we treat
We treat a variety of conditions in women including:
- urinary incontinence (difficulty controlling the bladder)
- vaginal prolapses
- pelvic pain
- sexual problems associated with pelvic floor dysfunction
- overactive bladder symptoms (such as urgency or frequency)
- pregnancy related pain, after 16 weeks of pregnancy
We aim to help you improve your symptoms and learn to self-manage effectively and maintain overall positive changes to health and wellbeing.
We work closely with the continence nursing team and the urogynaecology service and, where appropriate, we can refer you for more tests or procedures.
We also work in a specialist bowel biofeedback service. We can only accept referrals from GPs or consultants, and unable to accept self-referrals.
In this clinic we treat men and women with:
- faecal incontinence (difficulty controlling the bowel)
- constipation
- bowel dysfunctions associated with pelvic floor muscle and abdominal dysfunction
What will happen at my appointment?
You will be seen by a female specialist pelvic health physiotherapist in a private room. At your first appointment we will talk to you about your condition, understand your problems, and what you want to achieve. We understand it can be tricky to talk about things which are personal and sensitive, but we are here to help you. This appointment can take up to an hour and follow up appointments last up to 30 minutes. We can offer telephone appointments if you would prefer, or a telephone follow-up after a discussion with your physiotherapist.
If appropriate, and with your consent, we will conduct an internal examination of your pelvic floor muscle. You can ask for someone to be with you (a chaperone) if you would like. This examination will help us to create your tailored treatment plan. We can still provide treatment and help if you do not want to be examined.
See our leaflet for information about your appointment: What to expect when you visit a bladder, bowel and pelvic physiotherapist.
