Emergency Department

In 2026 we opened our £14.2 million Emergency Department redevelopment at Torbay Hospital.

The investment allowed us to increase capacity and improve the way we manage urgent and emergency care. The redevelopment was completed in phases to make sure we could keep our Emergency Department open for patients throughout the project.

Construction work included a wrap-around extension to the existing Emergency Department and new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facilities to support improvements to patient flow, privacy and dignity. We also created a new reception area, waiting room and triage rooms on the ground floor, including a dedicated mental health space. Upstairs, new staff offices and a training room were added.

The redevelopment has helped modernise the way we deliver care, creating a brighter and more spacious environment for patients and a significantly improved workplace for our dedicated colleagues. Feedback from both patients and staff has been overwhelmingly positive, with the new facilities making a real difference to their experience.
