Restorative Dentistry is concerned with the care of patients who require restoration of the oral and the dental tissues. This involves the disciplines of periodontics (gums), endodontics (root canal therapy / removal of dental nerve) and prosthodontics (crowns, bridges and dentures), which includes dental implants.

What is the purpose of the Restorative Dentistry service at Torbay?

The service provides advice on diagnosis and treatment planning for the patient’s dentist to undertake as well as treatment of those who require complex dental care that is considered too specialised for the patient’s dentist.

What type of treatment is provided?

Periodontal, endodontic and prosthodontic treatment is provided, however, the priority for treatment undertaken within the department is for patients with congenital and acquired defects of the oral and dental structures. For example; patients with Cleft Lip and Palate, Oral Cancer, children who fail to develop teeth and those with conditions (such as diabetes or blood disorders) who are prone to dental infections. Is there any cost for Restorative Dentistry treatment?

Unless exempt, patients pay standard NHS charges for dentures and bridges only.

Who oversees Restorative Dentistry service?

There is one Consultant in Restorative Dentistry.

How can I be seen in the Restorative Dentistry department?

Your dentist must refer you to the consultant.

Information for referring dentists

The following information is must be included on the referral letter:

  • A specific reason for the referral.
  • Any relevant medical history.
  • A detailed history of previous treatment undertaken and response to such treatment.
  • Copies of any recent or relevant radiographs and study casts.
